What about “Certified” used cars?

It is extremely important to understand the phrase “Certified” used car in the used car game. Some programs are “Manufacturer Certified”, which must adhere to strict standards (some auto makers are more strict than others) while other programs are “Dealer Certified” programs. The manufacturer will  often look for a low mileage trade-in (because they usually get first pick of trade-ins) that can be cleaned up (probably refurbished) and qualify for their “Certified” used car program. This will of course, cost more money but will come with a manufacturers extended warranty. The “Dealer Certified” program, usually consist of a good cleaning and adding an extended used car warranty.

Warning: most of these used car warranties are worthless and the used car has not gone thru the same standards as a manufacturers program. Be sure to get written documentation that the “Certified” used auto is a factory certification. Do not buy any additional auto warranties! An extended warranty should come with a “Certified” used car.

A free vehiclesafety inspection from a repair shop or garage.

Remember – You Get What You Pay For!

Yes, the repair garage has “certified technician”s that repair and diagnose vehicles and have the sophisticated tools needed for today’s vehicles, but not every person that works on your vehicle may be certified in the required areas or know what the tools are showing them. The average “ASE Master Certified” Automotive Technician gets paid $25.00 per hour. At $25.00 per hour do you think you will be getting a thorough used car inspection from the garage or that a certified technician will even be the one to perform the “used vehicle inspection” or that the type of tools needed to check all the highly sophisticated electronics and mechanical parts other then a flash light will be used on the vehicle you are wanting to purchase? The guy that has little experience and has maybe 1 or 2 certifications will probably inspect your vehicle (the low man).  How much time do you think is going to be spent on your “free safety inspection”? You also have to take the car to them and if they are in the business of repairing cars how long will it be until they get to your free safety inspection

Cautio
n
: Repair shops are in the business of doing (surprise) repair work.  This is another conflict of interest for both you and the used car seller.  It’s better to have an unbiased used auto pre-purchase inspection performed first and then have your mechanic verify any findings (for free, right?).

A used vehicle history report.

Yes, they can let you know that the vehicle was in an accident, stolen and recovered, burnt or in a flood in the past. While all that is good, it does not tell you the condition of the used car now, today. If the “used auto” has a salvage title it may have been properly repaired since then and you may be passing up a good deal. A properly repaired “used car” is just as reliable and safe as one that has never been in an accident. On the other hand, the used car may have been in an accident that was not bad enough to total it and not repaired properly making it unsafe or very expensive to repair as you start to find things that do not work. This can be a very bad deal if you were the one to buy this car. A “used vehicle history report “cannot tell you about this.  This is why an on-site pre-purchase inspection should be a must!
